The odds are stacked against Notre Dame on Monday in the College Football Playoff National Championship. During an appearance on Get Up, ESPN’s Booger McFarland suggested the Fighting Irish will need divine intervention to upset the Ohio State Buckeyes.

“They’re going to need turnovers. They’re going to need big plays,” McFarland said. “More importantly, they need to get out down their knees right now and talk to Touchdown Jesus and say, ‘Hail Father, art thou. Put your hands over the Mercedes Benz dome today,’ because let’s face it, they are out-manned tonight.

“But this ball bounces funny. It bounces different. So [Marcus Freeman‘s] got to convince his team — and I think this is the No. 1 thing — it’s about mindset and everybody on this desk knows this. Can he convince a team that knows they’re out-manned that they can win? The greatest thing that an athlete can have is belief, and if they have belief tonight, I think that’s the one way they can keep this game competitive.”

According to FanDuel, Notre Dame is an 8.5-point underdog against Ohio State. The Buckeyes have looked formidable throughout the CFP, defeating Tennessee and Oregon in their first two CFP games by a combined 45 points.

While Texas gave Ohio State a much closer game, the Buckeyes still ultimately pulled away with a 28-14 victory. In the win, the Buckeyes racked up 370 total yards of offense against the Longhorns, including 289 passing yards.

Ohio State’s offense isn’t its only successful unit. The Buckeyes’ defense is giving up just 251.1 yards per game, the least in the nation. To make matters worse for the Fighting Irish, they’ve been battling injury issues in the final stretch of the season.

Most recently, Anthonie Knapp suffered a season-ending injury in the CFP semifinals against Penn State. Star running back Jeremiyah Love isn’t at full strength either, and played with a large knee brace on against the Nittany Lions.

Now, the Fighting Irish will have to push their setbacks to the side and strap up for one final game. After all, Ohio State isn’t the only talented team taking the field on Monday night.

The Fighting Irish’s defense only allows 165.3 passing yards per game, the second-least in the country. This could cause problems for Ohio State’s offense, which relies heavily on its talented wide receivers.

On offense, Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard is the definition of fighting spirit and won’t back down for a second from the Buckeyes. Booger McFarland can rest assured that the Fighting Irish aren’t concerned with the odds.

Notre Dame will square off against Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game will air live on ESPN.
