Former Northwestern safety Brandon Joseph, who entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on December 30, tells On3 he has committed to continue his career at Notre Dame.

Joseph was a two-year starter and an All-American in 2020 for the Wildcats. He was at Northwestern for 3 seasons and eligible to play for the Irish immediately.

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Joseph finished the 2021 season with 79 tackles, three interceptions, and one sack. In a shorted 2020 season, Joseph tallied 52 tackles and six interceptions. That season Joseph was a consensus All-American, earning first-team honors from the AFCA, Associated Press and Sporting News.

As a recruit in the 2019 class, Joseph was rated three-stars by the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. However, On3 ranks Joseph as the nation’s No. 281 most impactful college player in the 2021 season.

Blue & Gold reported that Joseph scheduled a visit to Notre Dame this weekend. The spring semester is set to begin January 10 at Notre Dame.

Brandon Joseph a part of booming transfer portal

Brandon Joseph was one of more than 1,300 football players in the NCAA transfer portal. That number includes scholarship and non-scholarship players alike.

The NCAA Transfer Portal, which covers every NCAA sport at Division I, II and III levels, is a private database with names of student-athletes who wish to transfer. It is not accessible to the public.

The process of entering the portal goes through a school’s compliance office. Once a player provides written notification of an intent to transfer, the office enters the player’s name in the database. The compliance office has 48 hours to comply with the player’s request.

Once a player’s name shows up in the portal, other schools can contact the player. Players can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a player enters the portal, their current program no longer has to provide a scholarship if they choose to return.
