Cam Newton rooting for Notre Dame in CFP National Championship
After criticizing their program over the last few weeks, Cam Newton is in on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to win the College Football Playoff.
Newton said so on Friday during his weekly appearance on ‘First Take’. With him having debated against Notre Dame, specifically with Ryan Clark, for the last month and a half. Newton now wants to see Notre Dame win the national championship in the CFP.
“My point is this – and I want you to hear this, Mr. Clark, Papa Clark. I’m going for Notre Dame!” Newton stated. “Like, I really want Notre Dame to win.”
That’s only for one reason, though, as Newton is rooting for Marcus Freeman as the first Black head coach to coach for a national title. Beyond that fact, he isn’t that interested in who wins between Notre Dame and Ohio State on Monday.

“It’s because of one reason. Marcus Freeman? He’s the first Black coach to coach in a national championship and to potentially win a national championship,” said Newton. “Other than that, I could care less. But it’s because of Coach Marcus Freeman. That’s why I’m going with Notre Dame, you get what I’m saying?”
Again, this comes after weeks of Newton going at the Fighting Irish and their brand. He has said no one wanted to see Notre Dame in the playoff, likened them to the Dallas Cowboys, and said that they cake-walked their way into the semifinals. He also deemed the winner of the Cotton Bowl, whether Ohio State or Texas, as the eventual national champion the morning after they had advanced into the title game past Penn State.
Still, after all that, Newton is now in support of the Irish, much like several other names at ESPN, come kickoff in Atlanta.
