Greg McElroy calls Notre Dame's golden helmets 'perfection'
Notre Dame’s exclusive window to negotiate a new apparel deal with Under Armour has come to an end. With that, one of the biggest brands in college athletics is on the open market for a new deal. No matter who does end up with that deal, one thing that is never going to change is Notre Dame’s iconic golden dome helmet.
Those helmets, which are among college football’s most iconic, were recently described as “perfection” by analyst Greg McElroy.
“Going within the simple, traditional uniforms — the golden dome of Notre Dame,” McElroy said on Always College Football. “That simple, golden, 24-karat, flaked gold helmet, to me, is perfection.”
The Notre Dame helmet is bright gold, painted the Friday before every game. Those helmets pay their respects to the golden dome on top of The Main Building. There have been some tweaks throughout history and the occasional changeup for events like the Shamrock Series. However, for the most part, the gold helmets have highlighted Notre Dame’s iconic uniforms.
“Probably because I grew up watching Rudy, like all of you, and Rudy wanted to spray paint the helmets before the game when he was part of the pep rally club or whatever the heck it was. Like, I love the golden dome, and to see those things in person, to see how they sparkle, under a perfect autumn afternoon, is a really cool thing,” McElroy said.

“Is it my favorite helmet? Arguably, perhaps. If it’s not number one, it’s certainly in the top two or three. But the golden dome of Notre Dame, those golden helmets would be number three.”
McElroy is excited for the Ohio State-Notre Dame game
In September, Ohio State will travel to Notre Dame for a rematch of last season’s game, which the Buckeyes won. It’s a game that a lot of people, including Greg McElroy, are looking forward to.
“I’m going to go with Ohio State and Notre Dame. Ohio State last year of course, second half put the clamps down defensively. Limited Tyler Buchner and company. But for the most part, Ohio State offensively, not the type of juggernaut performance that many of us anticipated,” McElroy explained.
“A lot of us looked at it and said man, Notre Dame played well that day. Played well on defense, at least. Just couldn’t punch it in when they crossed the 50. They couldn’t put together enough drives offensively to get the job done. Now they host the Buckeyes in what should be one of the biggest non-conference games in recent history.”
