Hannah Hidalgo stresses importance of her bringing energy for Notre Dame
Hannah Hidalgo was the key for Notre Dame’s 79-68 upset over UConn Thursday night. The sophomore has only improved since committing to the school and could be the key cog for a team that has national title hopes.
She finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in the home victory for the No. 8 Fighting Irish. Notre Dame pulled away in the fourth quarter thanks to her energy.
Wearing the emotions on her sleeve, Hidalgo doesn’t mind bringing the noise each and every day.
“I know I’m that energy piece for my team,” Hidalgo said. “So I try and bring it, not only for every game, but for every practice. Like what you guys see in the games is kind of what I’m bringing for practice. So I know my team needs that, and I know they feed off of that. So I’m trying to be consistent, bringing that energy.”
Head coach Niele Ivey acknowledged Hidalgo was a great spark for their efforts. During this three-game winning streak, the Irish also knocked off No. 6 Texas in overtime.

Hidalgo had 30 points, eight rebounds and four assists in that win.
“I think it’s shown them what type of team we can be incapable of being,” Ivey said. “I always talk about them being elite all the time, and they understand what that looks like, feels like, going again in a stretch that we just went through such a tough stretch with Texas, with UConn, going to the Cayman Islands, like we knew this was going to be a tough stretch.
“So we’ve learned a lot in these last several weeks, but I’m hoping that they took the lesson that when we play we play with heart, we play with discipline, we play with focus. We can be just as elite as everybody else in the country. So that’s, I learned a lot from this group, and I’m just really proud of again, their toughness and their resilience, because you know you know we had a tough stretch we came back and we got back to work, you know, they didn’t hang their heads.”
Hidalgo and Notre Dame are back in action Sunday against Eastern Michigan but don’t play another ranked opponent until January 5th, traveling to North Carolina.
