Notre Dame tight end Kevin Bauman had a life-changing moment last September when he tore his ACL during a practice. But Bauman said the process of recovery has changed his persepctive on life and football.

“If there was ever a time in my life that I’ve learned something, it’s now,” Bauman said after a spring practice in March. “Really just kind of looking back on when I’m healthy, you kind of take everyday things for granted. Really, this has put a lot of things in perspective just not only in the game of football but life in general. With setbacks and everything, I’ve definitely learned a lot and have grown a lot these past couple of months. It hasn’t been an easy journey but something that I’ve learned it’s part of life.”

Bauman was the backup tight end to All-American Michael Mayer but that didn’t mean he had a small role in the offense. Bauman played his part in Tommy Rees’ 2022 offense well during his three games during the season before the injury.

“You don’t know why things happened to you or whatever,” Bauman said. “I’ve learned to just stay committed, stay focused, control the things I can control. I couldn’t really control the day that it happened. But I have control of how I attack rehab, my mindset heading into it, how engaged I say mentally in the game and how I could be the best teammate possible for some of these guys. It’s put a lot of things into perspective.

“Thankfully, I have a great support system, a great faith that’s kept me mentally strong so very grateful for that. I’m chomping at the bit to get back out there. I’m never taking anything for granted again. I can promise that.”

Bauman has chance to step into a bigger role this season as he recovers from his injury. He is excited to try and make that happen.

When asked what is the one thing he really wants to do when he’s back, Bauman kept his answer short and sweet.

“Be on the field,” Bauman said. “That’s it. Like I said, you take things for granted, I would do anything to be out there with my brothers right now to represent this University on the football field and showcase what I can bring to this team, what I can bring to the field. I just can’t wait to get out there. I know the stuff I’ve been doing that will get me to that point. It’s going to be special when I’m back.”
