LOOK: Famed Michigan coach Lloyd Carr poses in Notre Dame hat with grandson CJ Carr
In any other situation, legendary Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a Notre Dame hat. But family trumps all, and on Thursday night when his grandson — four-star 2024 quarterback CJ Carr — committed to Notre Dame, Carr donned a gray hat with the Golden Domers’ logo on it.
It remains to be seen whether he’ll ever actually put on blue and gold.
As for his grandson, the younger Carr chose the the Fighting Irish over Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Georgia and a handful of other programs. He told On3’s Chad Simmons that it wasn’t easy telling his grandpa’s school ‘no.’

“Michigan has always been in my family,” Carr told On3. “I will always have that connection, but I wanted to go further from home. … It flipped 180 degrees from when I was a kid. I used to hate Notre Dame, and now I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
He ranks as the nation’s No. 23 prospect in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. CJ Carr also checks in as the No. 4 quarterback in the cycle and No. 1 player in Michigan.
