Marcus Freeman on running onto the field at The Horseshoe as Ohio State player, lessons for his Notre Dame team

Marcus Freeman will coach his first regular season game as Notre Dame’s head coach on the road at Ohio State. That’s also, fittingly enough, where Freeman played his college ball. Now, he needs to get his team ready to run into that atmosphere.

During a press conference, Marcus Freeman was asked by a reporter about running onto the field at the Horseshoe.

“For me, I learned something last year from Coach [Brian] Kelly, when we were getting ready to play Florida State and Virginia Tech and he showed our players a little bit of a video of what it’s really like to be down there,” Marcus Freeman explained.

“You know, I never coached at Virginia Tech or Florida State and it was kind of cool to just see, okay this is what it’s gonna be like. And I think I’m gonna take the same approach and try to show them a bit of what the gameday atmosphere will be like.”

After explaining how he’s going to prepare Notre Dame for the Horseshoe, Marcus Freeman reflected on his own time as a player for Ohio State.

“But, you know, I have great memories of running on the field at Ohio Stadium. You know, but the ones that you remember the most are the teammates. Those memories of running out there with your teammates. There’s not a specific game that I remember more than the others. Just being out there, being around your teammates. I remember Senior Day, your last one, but again, what really matters is the message to the team,” Marcus Freeman returned focus to the game.

“It’s still 53 and a 1/3, you know, by 120 [yards]. And what we can’t do is let those things that are outside those white lines affect what we do on the field. Because if you do, it’s gonna be a long game. But if you can really focus on and understand it’s what matters between those white lines, you know, that really affects and impacts the game, if we can focus on that and we can execute then you don’t let those outside sources really affect what you’re doing.”
