Markus Burton injury update: TBS broadcast reveals unfortunate news on Notre Dame guard

Notre Dame guard Markus Burton is out the remainder of Tuesday evening’s game against Rutgers with a knee injury, it was revealed on the TBS broadcast.
Burton suffered the injury in the first half when a Scarlet Knights player landed on top of him. He had to be taken to the locker room and was later seen back on the bench with his leg propped up as sideline reporter Allie LaForce offered the update on his status.
“Burton made his way out of the locker room and you can see he looks devastated,” she said. “He’s got his foot propped up and he’s not going to be returning to this game. Just a reminder for everyone if they missed it, he took a pretty hard fall and his knee got hit pretty bad. He went back to the locker room and decided he would not be returning to the game. They’re gonna wait until after the game to take him to get his knee evaluated more.”
The ACC Rookie of the Year in 2023-24, Burton is the leading returning scorer for the Fighting Irish with 17.5 points per game in addition to 4.3 assists last year. He had been off to an even better start through the first five contests this year, averaging 21.4 points on 34.6% from 3-point range.

Burton made his only shot attempt of the game and has two points as Notre Dame held a 35-34 lead at halftime. Fighting Irish coach Micah Shrewsberry opened up on the challenge the team has ahead in the second half without him.
“It’s one of our main ball handlers,” the coach explained. “One of the guys we’re running a lot of stuff for. They amped up their pressure and we’ve just got to handle it a little bit better. We’ve got to settle down. We’ve got multiple guys that need to bring it and need to help us. We need to get into a better offense.”
A three-start recruit out of Penn High School (IN), Markus Burton has been a gem of a player compared to his recruiting ranking. He was listed as the No. 152 player and No. 24 point guard in the 2023 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
