Micah Shrewsberry shared some fascinating insight as to how he’s approaching scheduling at Notre Dame as he prepares for his first season on the job.

The former Penn State leader turned Fighting Irish men’s basketball head coach recognizes Notre Dame is a global brand. Pointing out that the football team and women’s basketball team will both be playing abroad next season, Shrewsberry is excited to bring some new flavor to the men’s basketball team’s schedule in the future.

“You know, right now those are the major games that we have, and you know, I believe in the future. Like this year, as I’ve said, is a little bit of a transition period. Scheduling’s been the last thing that’s been on my mind, you know, making this transition. I think in the future there’s opportunity, especially having a brand like Notre Dame, we can go and do certain things,” explained Shrewsberry, via College Hoops Today with Jon Rothstein. “We can go and play certain places. I think of our football team that’s opening the season in Ireland. Our women’s basketball team is going to Paris to play against South Carolina. Like there’s opportunities for us out there as well.

“We want to take advantage of those. We want to give our guys the best experiences possible, and having a brand like Notre Dame is going to help us do those really special events.”

Additionally, Rothstein threw out the possibility of Notre Dame facing off against fellow Indiana-based schools like the Indiana Hoosiers, Purdue Boilermakers and Butler Bulldogs, to which the freshly-minted leader of the team was receptive.

“I think doing something, and showcasing our team, out university within the state is something that I’d like to do. Whether that’s playing a game in Indianapolis, or whether that’s going and playing home-and-homes with the other teams in this state, I think that’s really important for us,” added Shrewsberry. “Like we’re going to recruit the State of Indiana. There’s really good players here. There’s really good coaches here. This is our home. We’re going to recruit this state. So being able to play in-state, and have some opportunities, is something that we’re looking forward to.

“I haven’t beat Coach [Matt] Painter, so I don’t think that’s at the top of the list of things that I want to you know, go and do right away. Maybe the other teams, if they want to play, I’d love to play them. But we have a great friendship. He’s one of the guys that I really lean on. So you know, I’d be honored to play them. Indiana, Butler. Whoever it may be. Just so we can continue to showcase Notre Dame basketball in the State of Indiana.”

Notre Dame wants to own the State of Indiana under Micah Shrewsberry, and that could be a big step in doing so. The future is bright for the Fighting Irish, and some fresh and exciting matchups seem to be on the horizon.
