Micah Shrewsberry let some, including a mic, have it in regards to doubt in the Fighting Irish.

Following a 75-60 loss for Notre Dame to Louisville on Sunday, Shrewsberry ranted about what’s been going wrong for them to the extent that he eventually knocked over the microphone as he walked out of the press conference. It got more heated as it went but began with a simple answer that their team would continue to play despite having lost four of five to fall to 11-14 overall.

“I don’t know, man. We’re going to keep fighting. That’s it. As a group, as a team – we’re going to keep fighting, alright,” said Shrewsberry. “We’re going to keep trying to get back to the drawing board. We’re going to keep trying to guard people. We’re going to keep trying to score on people. And we’re playing good people too, alright. But I know these guys aren’t going to quit. They’re not going to quit, right.”

From there, though, Shrewsberry turned his frustration to those who have already counted out him, his team, and his program at this point. He gets it to an extent considering his work through his season and a half there as head coach but also asks that people not take it out on his players with what they’re still trying to do for the school.

“I understand that a lot of people have quit on us and well-deserved. If you hate me? Absolutely, man. Great. If you think I suck, if you think I can’t coach? I’m with you, man. Good. Good for you because you’re allowed to have opinions. You think I should be fired? Good for you. You’re allowed to have opinions, right,” Shrewsberry said. “A lot of people have given up on this team. They’ve given up on me. I don’t really give a damn. I believe in myself and I believe in these guys, okay. So, like, don’t give up on these guys, don’t give up on these kids.”

“If you don’t want to show up because of me? Don’t show up because of me, because you think I suck. Cool. I’m okay with that. I’m okay with it. I know people believe in me, right. I know, I know people at Notre Dame believe in me. But I, like – don’t give up on these kids, man,” said Shrewsberry. “What have they done for people to give up on them? If you’re not with us because we’re losing and you don’t want to come watch us? Fine. Fine. But do it because of me then but not these kids, man. They don’t deserve that. They don’t deserve that. Like, ain’t nobody else getting home at 5 a.m. from Boston College and going to class the next day, and coming to practice, and working out, and preparing to play Louisville. Ain’t nobody else is doing that. Don’t give up on these kids, man.”

That’s when Shrewsberry got very intense reiterating those same points about those, including their fans, who aren’t supporting Notre Dame. It came with a promise too that he would get this right from today on before hitting the mic over as he got up.

“I don’t care about anybody’s opinion. I know who I am. I know I can coach basketball and I know I’m turning this program around,” said Shrewsberry. “So, you gave up on me already? I don’t want to see you back here. I don’t give a damn. Don’t give up on these kids because we’re going to get this thing rolling.”

“I sat there and watched more Louisville fans in here than Notre Dame people and that’s embarrassing. That’s embarrassing for me because I’m the head coach here. Yeah, I got us in this predicament – but don’t come back when we’re winning because we’re turning this around, man. You better believe that,” Shrewsberry stated. “Everybody that gave up on me? Believe it! Write this date down and believe it! We’re going to get this thing rolling. Don’t care if you gave up on me or not!”

This came after Notre Dame fell to 11-14 overall this season and 5-9 in the ACC. That’s from three separate skids this year for their team with a five-game losing streak in the non-conference, a four-game losing streak to open conference play, and now this stretch having lost four of their five games since the start of February.

In total, the record to this point for the Fighting Irish under Shrewsberry is now at 24-34 (.414.).

Still, Notre Dame has six games left to make something of this second season under Shrewsberry. That gives them at least seven opportunities left to prove those people wrong from this day forward as he was promising.
