Micah Shrewsberry believes Notre Dame is trending in the right direction
The Micah Shrewsberry era is off to a rough start at Notre Dame, currently sitting with a 7-12 record fresh off a defeat to Miami. Three games in a row have resulted in a loss, also making it five out of the last six. Coming off the retirement of legendary head coach Mike Brey, the rebuild in South Bend was always going to be a tough one.
Shrewsberry was asked if the program was heading in the right direction following the Miami loss. He was adamant Notre Dame was going down the right path. Whether he is the head coach or when somebody eventually takes over, he believes in the institution.
“The program is going in the right direction,” Shrewsberry said. “The program is bigger than me, it’s bigger than anybody on our team, it’s bigger than anybody in this room, it’s bigger than anybody at Notre Dame. Notre Dame basketball is going to be here, whether I’m here or not here. It’s been going for a long time before me, it’s going to go for a long time after me. So, nobody is bigger than our program.”
Brey was Notre Dame’s head coach for 23 years, making the NCAA Tournament 13 times. They were able to make the Elite Eight twice under his watch. The program has played at an elite level in the past and Shrewsberry plans to get there once again.

In fact, he is okay with taking the losses as long as the right guys are in the program. Shrewsberry understands it’s better for the Fighting Irish’s long-term health.
“I would rather lose with the dudes who are going to play the right way that are going to build this culture than win with somebody who’s not doing it the right way,” Shrewsberry said. “Not to say they haven’t been. They played really hard in other games. I hope this helps them play really hard against Boston College.”
Both Notre Dame and Boston College sit at 2-6 in ACC play, with only Louisville being worse off. You would not think a game between teams in 12th and 14th to be off the charts. But with how Shrewsberry called his team out, the Fighting Irish should come out swinging.
