Report: Micah Shrewsberry to receive 7-year contract worth 'well more than $4 million per year' at Notre Dame
Micah Shrewsberry reportedly had a big-time offer on the table to stay at Penn State before ultimately leaving for Notre Dame. After the news broke, some of the contract details emerged.
Stadium reporter Jeff Goodman reported Shrewsberry is set to receive a seven-year deal from the Fighting Irish worth “well more than” $4 million annually.
Shrewsberry just wrapped up his second season with Penn State — his first Division I head coach job. He led the Nittany Lions to a 23-14 record this past season, including a 10-10 mark in Big Ten play. This season ended with a Round of 32 defeat to Texas after knocking off Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
On the whole, Shrewsberry amassed a 37-31 record in two years in Happy Valley.
Now, he’s heading back to his native Indiana, where he went to high school and college before spending most of his coaching career in his home state. An announcement from Notre Dame is expected Friday, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander.
Although the Fighting Irish haven’t made Shrewsberry’s hiring official, Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft confirmed the Nittany Lions are starting a coaching search in a Wednesday night statement.

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
“This afternoon, Penn State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Micah Shrewsberry called to inform me that he was leaving the University to accept a position at another institution,” Kraft said. “We thank Micah for his contributions to the Penn State community and wish him the very best. We are already moving forward in a search for a new head coach and will identify and appoint a tremendous coach, teacher and person, who will take us to unprecedented heights.
“We are so proud of our amazingly talented student-athletes and all they accomplished this year and will in the future. We are also so appreciative of our student body and our passionate fans who support our basketball program.”
Shrewsberry started his coaching career in 1999 at Division III Wabash before heading to DePauw from 2001-03. In 2005, he landed his first head coaching job at NAIA Indiana-South Bend — giving him a connection to South Bend — where he totaled a 15-48 record in two years. From there, he latched on under Brad Stevens at Butler from 2007-11 and later went up I-65 to Purdue to work under Matt Painter from 2011-13.
Following a stint with the Boston Celtics from 2013-19, Shrewsberry returned to West Lafayette as an assistant from 2019-21.
