Mike Brey discusses next steps for Notre Dame following loss in ACC Tournament
Notre Dame entered the 2022 ACC Tournament as the ACC’s second seed, earning a double bye into the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Fighting Irish played for the first time in the tournament on Thursday, but fell to seventh seeded Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech ultimately picked up the victory, sending the Irish home early. Now, Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey is focused on Selection Sunday.
Brey was asked after Notre Dame’s loss about what his plans are moving forward this season, and he plans on starting by having the team over to his house to watch the selection show.
“Well, I’ve got them coming to my house Sunday night, and we’ll see what our destiny is,” Brey said when asked about the next steps for Notre Dame. “I’m excited about us moving forward. I think we’re in pretty good shape. I guess we’ll find out Sunday. I’ve got the food ordered, so we’re all going to be over there Sunday.”
Brey expects Notre Dame to bounce back in the NCAA Tournament
Virginia Tech might have just had Notre Dame’s number this season. The two teams met back on Jan. 15, and the Hokies came away with a 79-73 victory. Virginia Tech also went on to win the ACC Tournament, clinching its spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame’s spot isn’t 100% set in stone, but the Irish are in a solid spot entering Selection Sunday. Brey is confident that Notre Dame is going to bounce back well in the NCAA Tournament, assuming they are given a bid on Sunday.
“I think what’s great for this group is after tonight and maybe not getting off to a start and playing well early, which we have done for most of the year, that they still get another chance to do that is a good thing,” said Brey. “I think they’ll bounce back really well next week.”
After losing to Virginia Tech, Notre Dame sits at 22-10 overall on the season. The Irish went 15-5 in ACC play during the regular season. In ESPN’s latest Bracketology released on the morning of Selection Sunday, Notre Dame was listed as one of the final four teams into the field. On3’s latest projection also had Notre Dame as one of the final teams into the tournament.
The full NCAA Tournament bracket will be revealed at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening.
