Notre Dame‘s defense had been excellent against Texas Tech in the first half, but coach Mike Brey was concerned with how their offense struggled early. Notre Dame entered the half trailing 26-25, behind some fantastic defense from both teams in their round of 32 matchup.

Mike Brey on Texas Tech’s defense

“You know, they are really good defensively,” said Brey during his on-court interview. “We’re still trying to figure out how to help ourselves. I think we’re gonna have to swing it and drive a little bit and kick for threes. That’s the best looking stuff we have today.”

Notre Dame’s struggles against the Texas Tech defense was evident early, shooting just 25 percent from the field. However, some good shooting from long-range made up for some of their issues by hitting 5-of-16 shots from three-point territory. Notre Dame also shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the half.

The offense for both teams improved in the second half of action, leading to an exciting and tight finish to the game. Unfortunately, the Texas Tech defense proved to be too much down the stretch and the Red Raiders punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 with a 59-53 win.

Second half struggles with officiating

Fans of Notre Dame were beyond upset at the officiating during the second half of their matchup with Texas Tech after a set of questionable calls. Earlier in the half, a Notre Dame basket was waved off by the officials because of a shot clock issue leading to confusion and an upset coach in Mike Brey.

Later in the half, a flagrant foul was called on a jersey pull during a Texas Tech fast break that appeared to be “common” to fans. Finally, a dunk by Kevin McCullar Jr. was not called a violation as replay showed him grab the rim with his off-hand before the dunk.
