Notre Dame fifth-year senior Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa got tough news earlier in the week when his father unfortunately passed away. The defensive end traveled home to Hawaii to mourn his father’s death. On Friday, Notre Dame announced its seven captains for the 2021 season. Among them is Tagovailoa-Amosa.

Tagovailoa-Amosa called in from Hawaii for the announcement

Fighting Irish players elected Tagovailoa-Amosa a captain. Notre Dame tweeted a video of the team announcing the news of captaincy to Tagovailoa-Amosa.

“It’s an honor to be selected captain for this team,” he said. “I’m so blessed to have a coaching staff and teammates like you guys with the prayers and love you have shown me. I’m excited to get back to work, and thank you guys so much.”

Tagovailoa-Amosa took to Twitter with a message in response to the announcement, saying that he is happy to be a captain on the team.

“All Praise to the Most High,” he said. “It’s an honor and a privilege to serve my brothers. Congrats to my fellow Captains on a well-deserved title. I will not be discouraged because the Joy of the Lord is my Strength. This is just the beginning pops. To my brothers, FTB ALWAYS.”

Tagovailoa-Amosa is coming off of a second team All-ACC selection last season

Last year, Tagovailoa-Amosa played in eight games, totaling 17 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. His numbers earned him a selection to the All-ACC second team. In his four-year career at Notre Dame, he has totaled 55 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Tagovailoa-Amosa is in line for a bigger role this season on the outside of Notre Dame’s defensive line. He is set to switch to defensive end after beginning his career on the interior defensive line. Notre Dame’s defensive front looks strong, and Tagovailoa-Amosa is a strong candidate for a major breakout season.
