Notre Dame and Maryland are meeting at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Just how close was the game to starting? The national anthem was played, there was a flyover and the teams were out on the field to get underway. However, just before it started, it was delayed.

The lacrosse national championship game was originally pushed back to 1 p.m., but it was further delayed until 2 p.m. Not long after 2 the game did begin.

Notre Dame is looking for its second consecutive NCAA lacrosse championship. The Fighting Irish beat Duke 13-9 to win last year’s national title.

Notre Dame entered the lacrosse national championship game with a 15-1 record. During the tournament, the Irish beat Albany, Georgetown and Denver to reach the national championship game.

As for Maryland, the Terrapins entered the lacrosse national title game with an 11-5 record. Maryland beat Princeton, Duke and Virginia in the tournament to reach the national championship.

While Notre Dame won the 2023 lacrosse national title, Maryland won in 2022.

These two programs are very familiar with each other. The Irish and Terrapins had played 17 previous times entering Monday’s matchup. Maryland entered with a 9-8 advantage all time.

The two teams also played earlier this season, with Notre Dame earning a 14-9 win in South Bend.

Notre Dame was the favorite heading into the lacrosse national championship as the Irish have been dominant this month.

Since the start of May, Notre Dame is 5-0 with all five wins coming by five or more goals. The competition has also been steep during this stretch as four of the five wins came against teams ranked in the top-10.

The Irish entered Monday’s matchup as the nation’s leader in scoring offense (15.7 goals per game), points per game (25), shooting percentage (37.5). ND also ranks sixth nationally in clearing percentage at 89.8 percent.

Needless to say, Maryland has its hands full and will have to play extremely well in order to come away with another national championship.
