Mike Brey gives hilarious take on ACC coaches dress code decision

The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted many, many aspects of everyday life, but it also – and surprisingly – made a positive change across the college basketball landscape. Before the start of the global pandemic in March of 2020, college basketball head coaches were expected to wear suits for nearly all of their teams’ games, but that has since changed as many coaches are now just wearing athletic gear.
Once the 2020-2021 season tipped off, there were many COVID-related restrictions in place – ranging from only a certain number of fans being permitted to attend games, isolation procedures for positive COVID-19 tests and so forth. With all of the restrictions and changes in place, many college basketball coaches made the decision to ditch their suits and instead start wearing team athletic gear for games.
While some coaches have worn sweatpants and a quarter-zip jacket for games, others have dressed in khaki pants and a team polo shirt – and many coaches like that look better than wearing a suit, mostly due to the fact that it’s much more comfortable.
During an ESPN segment Saturday on the way college basketball coaches now dress, Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey shared a hilarious take on the ACC coaches’ dress code decision – saying that former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, alongside former North Carolina coach Roy Williams, started the movement of not wearing suits.

“It was funny,” Brey said. “The ACC coaches, going into the COVID year, it was so unanimous – started by the guy who’s going to play tonight, Mike K, saying, ‘No, no, no, no suits. No suits.’ And nobody fought back when Mike and Roy brought it up. So I’m not sure if we’re going to swing back.
“In the honor of all physical education majors, since I am one, I love the P.E. major look. I’m not sure I can go back, my man.”
Some college basketball coaches are continuing to wear suits for games, but most of them are now a part of the anti-suit movement.
