In the ninth inning of their opening round Men’s College World Series matchup, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish brought out their secret weapon to help finish off the Texas Longhorns, the rally banana. And the banana worked like a charm. With Notre Dame up 6-3 at the top of the ninth, with two outs, Carter Putz sent one over the far right-center wall to extend the Fighting Irish lead late in the game. Putz’s monster solo shot home run can be seen below.
Notre Dame uses the tradition late in games. Irish players line up along the front of the dugout and take a bite out of the banana for each positive play they have to close the game. However, with Texas still up to bat at the bottom of the inning Notre Dame still had some of the breakfast favorite fruit left to scarf down. And they did so with ease as the Fighting Irish closed out the last three hitters for the Longhorns to close out the game and advance to the next round of the Men’s College World Series.
