Notre Dame used WWE star Sheamus to announce that they’ll be wearing green jerseys on September 28th, 2024 against Louisville.

In the video that Notre Dame posted, head coach Marcus Freeman called Sheamus and he invited him to the game, which Sheamus seemed excited for before asking for a dress code. The answer to that was a simple one, Irish wear green.

You can watch the video of Freeman calling Sheamus to announce the green jersey game, here:

“I’ve got plenty of green, Coach,” Sheamus said, clapping his hands. “Plenty of green. Probably enough green for everybody in that stadium. So, I’ll be there.”

The green jersey game has become a tradition at Notre Dame to wear special green jerseys, instead of the traditional home navy, when a particularly challenging opponent comes to town. Last season, that meant wearing green when Ohio State came to town. That game ended in a loss. Notre Dame also lost its game on the road against Louisville last season. So, finding a way to get the Cardinals back while wearing their green uniforms is going to be on the minds of the Irish.

For his part, Sheamus makes sense for Notre Dame to give a call given their team nickname and the ties that has created with the Irish. After all, Sheamus himself is from Dublin and grew up playing GAA sports like Gaelic football. He got into wrestling, creating a character based on Celtic myth.

The green jersey game is an important tradition to Notre Dame. The most famous time the team wore green jerseys came back in 1977 against rival USC. The Irish came into that game as a slight underdog, but when the team came out of the locker room in their green jerseys and with a Trojan horse, the crowd took over and the game may as well have been over. Notre Dame went on to win that game 49-19 and later became the national champion.

Paul Finebaum makes Notre Dame’s best case as a 2024 national championship contender

Heading into the 2024 season, analyst Paul Finebaum broke down the best case for Notre Dame and what makes their situation unique now that the College Football Playoff has expanded.

“The answer is yes but I would be surprised. There’s a couple of reasons. I think they’ve got the team and they’ve got the schedule during the regular season,” Finebaum said.

“Now, here’s where it gets interesting. They don’t have a conference championship game, which gives them time to rest, except because they don’t have a conference championship game, they have to play by the new CFP rules in the first round. Probably at home, but it still puts them at a slight disadvantage to maybe some of the higher-ranked teams.”
