Notre Dame was struggling late against Marshall and facing a double-digit deficit. Things got even worse when the Fighting Irish quarterback left the game with an injury.

Tyler Buchner got tackled with 3:21 to play in the fourth quarter and appeared to be favoring his left shoulder as he got up. He immediately left the game and Drew Pyne came in to replace him.

At the time of his injury, Buchner completed 18 of 32 passes for 201 yards and two interceptions in the air while rushing for 44 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Buchner got his first collegiate start in that game last week, throwing for 177 yards on 10-of-18 passing in the effort. He beat Pyne out for the starting quarterback job during the offseason after sitting behind Jack Coan for a majority of the 2021 season under former head coach Brian Kelly.

After that game, Freeman heaped some high praise on his QB1, saying he liked what he saw against the Buckeyes in Columbus.

“I was pleased, for a second-year guy in his first collegiate start in that type of environment and in that type of game, I was really pleased. I think at one point in the first half Tyler was eight of eight, but like eight of ten in the first half or something like that, that’s really good,” Freeman said. “They had sent me some number for a QB rating, I don’t know much about QB rating so I told them I can’t use that, but I was really pleased.”
