Notre Dame has landed a big-time receiver out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. Former Virginia wideout Malachi Fields has committed to the Irish, per his Instagram page.

Fields is heading to Notre Dame after spending four years with the Cavaliers. This past season he earned third-team All-ACC honors after leading Virginia with 55 receptions for 808 yards and five touchdowns.

Malachi Fields signed with Virginia after being ranked as a three-star recruit and the No. 49 athlete in the country in the class of 2021, per the On3 Industry Rankings. He appeared in 11 games that season, making one start. He finished the year with 11 receptions for 172 yards.

During the 2022 season, Fields only appeared in one game, catching five passes for 58 yards and a touchdown. He then had a breakout year in 2023, catching 58 passes for 811 yards and five scores.

Malachi Fields followed that up by putting together another strong season in 2024.

He is now joining a Notre Dame team that finished 11-1 in the regular season and reached the College Football Playoff this year.

Marcus Freeman reacts to tying Notre Dame single season all-time wins record

While Malachi Fields will be with the Irish in 2025, this year’s Notre Dame team has produced history.

At a program with 11 national championships, it’s hard to have a season that stands out as remarkable. However, that’s exactly what head coach Marcus Freeman was able to do this season at Notre Dame, tying the single-season wins record in program history.

Now sitting at 12-1, the 2024 Notre Dame team is just the fifth team in program history to get to 12 wins in a season. That’s something that Freeman is proud of, even though his focus is still on doing what he can to win a national championship.

“You know, we wouldn’t be in this situation if we didn’t have 12 wins,” Marcus Freeman said. “So, I’m grateful to be a part of a program and a team that has been able to accomplish this. But you know I’m greedy, and my focus is — although I don’t want their focus to be on it, my focus is going to be on finding a way to get 13. That’s what matters. That’s what’s going to be important is to enjoy this thing but get ready for the next opportunity.”
