This season’s race for the Heisman Trophy is as uncertain as ever. Most years, by this point in the year somebody has emerged as a leading contender for the award. But this year that is not the case. Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker and Alabama quarterback Bryce Young might be the Heisman favorites at this point, but the wide open race leaves the door open for Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson, according to Brady Quinn.

Quinn points to Devonta Smith last season, who had the same odds as Henderson does at this point of the season.

“Devonta Smith, last year at this point in time in the season, his odds were +5000 [to win the Heisman],” Quinn said. “He was a longshot, climbed his back into it.

“You’ve got guys like TreVeyon Henderson at +5000 and some other guys too a little further back.”

Quinn picks Henderson as his longshot to win the Heisman

Saturday’s game between Michigan State and Ohio State is a pivotal one. The outcome will have big ramifications on the Big Ten and College Football Playoff race. But the outcome could prove to be a true Heisman-type stage for both Walker and Henderson.

Walker might be getting all of the attention in this game when it comes to the Heisman race, but Henderson has a chance to break out on the biggest stage and solidify his status as a contender. Asked by Matt Leinart who his longshot is to win the 2021 Heisman, Quinn picked Henderson.

“My longshot would be TreVeyon Henderson right now,” Quinn responded. “I think he starts that Heisman campaign [today]. Everyone talks about Kenneth Walker against Ohio State, look for Ohio State’s running back to steal the show today.”

Henderson has been a big part of Ohio State’s dominant offensive attack this year. Ohio State leads the nation with 550 yards per game. On the season, he has rushed 141 times for 1,035 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 7.3 yards per carry. Henderson also has 16 receptions for 223 yards and three touchdowns.

The freshman running back has a touchdown in all but one game this season. He has rushed for 100 yards three times this season, including a 277-yard, three touchdown performance in Week 3 against Tulsa. Henderson also has three games with at least 90 rushing yards.

Henderson’s numbers might not stack up to Walker’s in the Heisman discussion, but there is still time left in the season to catch up. Entering the weekend, Walker has 1,473 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground.
