WATCH: Cardale Jones criticizes media while honoring Dwayne Haskins at Ohio State memorial
As fans and Ohio State students gathered in memorial to the late Dwayne Haskins, former Buckeyes quarterback Cardale Jones spoke about his character. Jones left Ohio State after the 2015 season, prior to Haskins’ arrival in 2016, but he knew Haskins personally since being part of his recruiting.
Cardale Jones on Dwayne Haskins
As the sports world remembers the life of the young star from Ohio State, a memorial for Haskins was organized outside of Ohio Stadium on Tuesday. Haskins lost his life tragically as he was struck by a large vehicle while crossing a freeway early Saturday morning. Jones mentioned how long he had known Haskins, as well as calling out critics who questioned Haskins’ character following his death.
“I had the privilege of knowing Dwayne the longest,” said Jones. “Out of all these guys at the facility now, through his recruiting even though we were never actual teammates here at Ohio State. Man, I feel like we’re all here today to bring together — to pay our respects and somewhat celebrate Dwayne’s life. Some of the bogus comments about his character, who he was from media outlets and analysts… This is who Dwayne was.

“Everybody here who he touched on the field and off the field. A selfless kid. Someone who would give you the clothes off his back. And Chris spoke a little bit about his fashion, he wouldn’t have shied to give you fashion tips either. It just sucks that his life was cut so short. I guess he was just too good for all of us that the Lord had to call him home early. But to his family, his friends, his teammates — everyone knows that Dwayne was a faithful and faith-driven person.”
Jones’ sentiments reflect so many of Haskins’ peers comments since his passing. Haskins joined the NFL in 2019 and played two seasons as quarterback for Washington, before joining the Steelers for the 2021 season as a backup. Teammates and coaches from both organizations have spoken about his character and how great of a teammate he was.
