Carnell Tate fires brutal joke about Will Howard falling on breakaway run: 'He pulled a Daniel Jones'
Late in the Cotton Bowl, the Ohio State Buckeyes put the ball in quarterback Will Howard‘s hands on a fourth down and he broke free for what should have been a touchdown run. The only issue was he got tripped up over his own feet on the way to the end zone.
In the aftermath of that mistake, Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate could not help himself from giving his quarterback a hard time. Speaking to media ahead of the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, he joked that Will Howard had pulled a Daniel Jones on the would-be touchdown run.
“It was a great play call,” Carnell Tate said. “The defense came out and did something and we did something else, but it was a great play call. I thought it was a touchdown but Will, he pulled a Daniel Jones and it was like, nah.”
Tate is referencing the now well-known play from former New York Giants quarterback Jones where he broke free on a run and should have scored except for a similar issue of tripping over his own feet.
“We always get him, say you ain’t done none of this at K-State but now he comes over here, he can’t stay on his feet,” Tate smiled.

At the time, the Cotton Bowl between Ohio State and Texas was tied at 14. The Buckeyes were driving but chose to go for a 4th and 2 instead of trying a relatively long field goal. Will Howard broke it before going down on the play. Luckily, for Ohio State, they were still able to cap the drive off with a score and ultimately win the game.
Carnell Tate wasn’t the only one to joke about Will Howard getting tripped up by the turf monster. Immediately following the game, Ohio State edge rusher Jack Sawyer also joked with Howard about his stumble.
“Shit, I guess just don’t fall like Will [Howard] did,” Sawyer said about his scoop-and-score. “No, I’m joking. I’m kidding. But, seriously, I hit about the 30 [yard line] and I look back and I’m like I hope I’ve got some blockers. I’m running out of steam here, but they were running with me side-by-side.”
Ohio State won the game, making it much easier to joke about after the fact. Now, the Buckeyes are going to try and finish strong with a win in the National Championship Game against Notre Dame.
