Cart carrying Ryan Day, Will Howard crashes into wall after national title victory
Monday night, Ryan Day and Will Howard were on top of the college football world. They celebrated as the confetti fell at Mercedes-Benz Stadium after Ohio State won the national title over Notre Dame.
But as they headed to the postgame press conference, though, they hit some more adversity. A cart carrying Day and Howard crashed into a wall as they were heading through the tunnel to the media room.
Everyone appeared to be alright after the cart went into the wall. Understandably, though, the jokes followed quickly. (Disclaimer: The below video includes NSFW language.)
Ohio State took full control of Monday’s game in the first half, taking a 24-7 lead into halftime that grew to 31-7 out of the break. But Notre Dame didn’t back down, and Riley Leonard connected with Jaden Greathouse for a big touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it a 31-23 ballgame after a creative two-point conversion.
The Buckeyes then tried to drain clock, but ended up stalling out and appeared on their way to a punt. But one play from Will Howard – a 57-yard pass to Jeremiah Smith – sealed the game, and Jayden Fielding’s late field goal made it a 34-23 score, which held as the final.

That play was quite the call considering the situation. Ohio State was in full control of the clock after Notre Dame used its timeout, although the offense was starting to stagnate. But when the Fighting Irish ran a Cover 0 blitz, Smith found himself one-on-one against Christian Gray. Howard noticed it and knew what to do.
But in the moment, he knew it was a big-time call from Chip Kelly. Howard summed it up in the perfect way, as well.
“Man, they were running man coverage,” Howard said. “I said ‘Hey, I’m going to go let this thing loose for No. 4 and let him make a play on it.’ That was an unbelievable play, unbelievable play call, man. It took some nuts to call that. So, that was a fitting way to end it.”
