Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud is entering his second season as the starting quarterback and his third working with head coach Ryan Day behind the scenes. After starting the season with a win over No. 5 Notre Dame, the top Heisman candidate and highly touted NFL prospect discussed the relationship he has with his college coach.

While CJ Stroud and Ryan Day share many things in common, they also view the game differently, as he explained during a recent press conference.

“I definitely think we have two different perspectives when it comes to certain things,” said Stroud. “Like coach Day, he’s seeing things from – he played quarterback as well – but he hasn’t played in a while so. … But he thinks from a sideline perspective.”

As Ohio State prepared for the season opener against Notre Dame – and now transitions to the game prep for Arkansas State – there can become a brief frustration as the two look at a situation from alternate viewpoints.

“Sometimes he would confuse me. I’d be like, ‘coach, I’m just gonna go read the coverage and hope everything works out.’ But you can’t do that, so he keeps me honest with that type of stuff to make sure I’m fully prepared. The conversation is always good, sometimes he does say a lot, but I think I can do a good job of just knowing what he means and knowing what I have to accept and take into consideration for the game.”

While Stroud did open up the curtains on what the dialogue between the two looks like on the practice field and in the meeting room, he also made sure to say the communication on gameday is never in question.

“I’m not saying this happened in the game because we were really clean with our conversations and we were happy everything worked out even though it wasn’t perfect,” said Stroud. “But we knew that coming in. During the week, we didn’t know what they were going to do, so we prepared for a lot of their different coverages and fronts from prior places the (defensive coordinator) was at, Marcus Freeman where he was at – so like Cincinnati stuff, the Bengals stuff, just different things like that.”
