Desmond Howard takes pointed shot at Ohio State fans, SEC in defense of Ryan Day
A Wolverine gave credit to Ryan Day for winning the national title – while also firing one or two off at others in the process.
In appearing on ‘Get Up’ on Tuesday following the 34-23 win for Ohio State to win the College Football Playoff, Desmond Howard applauded Day as a deserving head coach and person.
“Well, the first thing is I like Ryan Day as a person. I think he’s a wonderful individual and I think he’s a good coach,” said Howard. “I believe that you say congratulations to Ryan Day.”
Ohio State, especially Day, had every expectation on them coming into the season and then even more pressure upon them after how they ended the regular season. They answered and handled all of it, though, with an all-time playoff run if for no other reason than how they faced in the first-ever expanded field.
Still, while having that championship achievement now by finishing at 14-2, Howard did note the one loss that the Buckeyes didn’t avenge on their record in reminding their fanbase of who won The Game for the fourth consecutive season.

“I think that, at times, (Day) is probably, even though he’s a good guy, maybe too good for that fanbase, especially the part that you were talking about who wanted him up out of there because of the loss to Michigan. But let’s not, like, minimize this. It’s not like he lost to Michigan. It was his fourth straight loss to Michigan,” Howard said. “That’s why they reacted the way they did so make sure you put context to that when, you know, you bring that to the equation.”
While he was at it too, Howard also took a moment to add that Ohio State, in being the second-straight team from the Big Ten to win the CFP, defeated two from the Southeastern Conference in doing so.
“It’s now two years in a row that a Big Ten team has won the national championship and, on the way, they knocked off two SEC schools, Tennessee and Texas, on the road to winning it,” Howard said.
Ohio State can hold it over everyone for the next few months for winning it all. Day can certainly do so above everyone too, whether in their rivalry, their conference, or their sport, with what he has now done in Columbus in becoming a national champion.
