The Ohio State Buckeyes enter Fall Camp without a clear starting quarterback. Instead, they have multiple talented quarterbacks in a competition with one another. Among those quarterbacks are Devin Brown and Kyle McCord.

Now, Brown has broken down the difference between himself and McCord as a quarterback.

“Everybody has different skillsets, you know, not everybody is the same quarterback,” Devin Brown said. “I would say I’m a little bit more athletic than Kyle, but at the end of the day, we’ve both got strong arms, we both can make plays, and he’s going to be able to make plays with his legs too. So, it just is what it is.”

According to the On3 Industry Rankings, both Devin Brown and Kyle McCord were five-star recruits in the Class of 2022 and Class of 2021 respectively. Brown appeared in just two games last season and didn’t throw a pass. Kyle McCord has significantly more experience, with 606 passing yards and three touchdowns in 12 games played, typically in mop-up duty.

To this point, head coach Ryan Day hasn’t given away much about the quarterback battle.

“You just never know how it’s all gonna shake. We’ve had this situation before, we kind of mentioned this last week a little bit, going back with CJ (Stroud), with Justin (Fields)Dwayne (Haskins) where after the first couple weeks of fall practice somebody emerged and then we went with the starter,” Day said.

“But that evaluation continued into the season, you remember that first year with CJ. It was into the third game he kind of had that shoulder issue, and then Kyle played in that game, and then CJ came back in. So you just never know how things are going to go, but in an ideal world you’d like to have somebody emerge after the first week or two. And we usually have that scrimmage on that second week on that Saturday and usually have a pretty good feel.”

Devin Brown on his mindset amid a QB battle

As Devin Brown explained, he’s working on improving and being the best version of himself instead of focusing on the quarterback battle.

“None of that’s even crossed my mind. I’m just trying to go out there and help this team win,” Brown said. “Whoever it is, we’re just trying to be the best versions of ourselves every day. And we’re not worried about, at the end of a practice, we’re not gonna be like, ‘Oh, he did better than me this day or that.’ It’s how did I perform? What did I get better at today? What was I really working at today to get better? And if I get myself better every day, that’s gonna be a really good few months that I’ve built up.”
