Devin Brown posts cryptic tweet amid Ohio State quarterback situation
Ohio State lost its starting quarterback shortly after the NCAA transfer portal opened. Kyle McCord will finish out his college career elsewhere, leaving a spot open in Columbus. Presumably, backup Devin Brown will take over, at least for the Cotton Bowl against Missouri. But a cryptic tweet has sent social media into a frenzy.
Brown posted a photo of ships burning down in the ocean, with no context added. No words were included, just what looks to be seven ships. All of them are on fire and sinking.
Even Ohio State fans in the replies, who usually would be quick to support their player, are confused by the message. Nobody is quite sure what it means. Maybe Brown is pledging his loyalty to Ohio State and saying he is staying. Or things are burning to the ground under Ryan Day.
Who knows.
Maybe Brown is referencing a certain point in history, something he has done in the past. Brown wears the No. 33, calling it “the original quarterback number.” Not too many quarterbacks would rock with it but Brown wanted to use the reference from the moment he stepped on campus.
According to Brown’s official roster profile, he is majoring in finance. History must be a side hobby the quarterback has.

Brown played in five games this season for Ohio State, completing 12 of his 22 pass attempts. They went for a total of 197 yards and two touchdowns. Day called Brown’s number on the ground a few times as well, having 35 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
Devin Brown should have opportunity in Cotton Bowl
Brown battled McCord for the starting job back in fall camp but was on the losing end. He served most of the season as the backup but did come into a few games to run certain packages. With McCord now off in the portal, Brown should have the opportunity to get a serious run as the starting quarterback, beginning against Mizzou in the Cotton Bowl.
Ohio State is certainly high on true freshman Lincoln Kienholz as well. With nothing more than adding a New Year’s Six bowl win at stake, maybe Day can give both guys the chance to show what they have heading into the 2024 season.
Being active in the transfer portal seems to be a logical solution as well, hoping to find someone who can bring the Buckeyes back to competing for national championships.
