Devin Brown missed Ohio State’s spring game with a finger injury, but don’t expect him to be sidelined much longer.

Speaking with the media after watching his teammates ball out, Brown explained when he expects to be back on the field for the Buckeyes.

“Just had a little procedure on it,” Brown explained, speaking about his injury. “Nothing crazy. We’ll be back in four weeks or so.”

That’s good news for the Ohio State quarterback. At the moment, he’s embroiled in a quarterback competition with Kyle McCord, who many believe will ultimately win the starting gig. Nevertheless, even though Brown couldn’t make his case during the spring game, he was elated to be able to cheer on his teammates.

“It’s definitely hard, knowing I could’ve been playing out there, but I mean, we were working for it all spring,” added Brown. “At the end of the day, I was just happy to be able to cheer on my guys and do what I could.”

Whether Brown or McCord is named the Ohio State starting quarterback for the 2023 season, they’ll be rooting for the other to succeed.

After their spring game, McCord explained that while it’s still going to be a competition throughout between the pair of five-star quarterbacks, he wants it to be a motivating factor for both him and Brown at this point going into the fall, rather than something that separates them.

“The competition has been great. We both know what it is,” admitted McCord. “But I think, at the end of the day, Devin’s definitely making me better. And I think vice versa as well.”

“Even though there’s not a winner of the job yet, I think that benefits both of us honestly. It’s gonna push both of us going into fall camp and there’s still a lot of time until the season. So I think it’ll keep (us) hungry. I think he’d say the same thing,” McCord said. “That’s definitely the wise thing to do at this point. Just keeping each other in check, keeping each other going.”

While Brown missed the game of course, the spring game still provided a good opportunity for everyone to center their eyes on McCord. The junior went out on Saturday and finished 18/34 for 184 yards plus a touchdown.

It remains to be seen whether Devin Brown or Kyle McCord ultimately wins the Buckeyes starting job, but both quarterbacks will be supportive either way. That’s a testament to the culture Ryan Day has built, and how special it is to play for Ohio State.
