Devin Brown shares his mindset amid Ohio State quarterback battle
The Ohio State Buckeyes are making their final preparations for the upcoming 2023 season during their fall camp. Despite being one of the top programs in the nation, it is unclear who will lead the Buckeyes’ offense into battle next season as the starting quarterback. One of the likely options is sophomore Devin Brown. Brown is competing with junior Kyle McCord for Ohio State’s starting quarterback position.
Head coach Ryan Day has not tipped his hand on which quarterback will start for the Buckeyes in Week 1. And as the training camp gets underway, it appears that both quarterbacks have a legitimate chance at earning the right to become the starter. But what is their mindset when it comes to all of this? Is either one thinking about their performance on a day-to-day basis? Is Brown worried about his status and whether he has a legitimate opportunity to start while at the Buckeyes fall camp? According to the sophomore quarterback, he has not pondered the answer to any of those questions.
“None of that’s even crossed my mind. I’m just trying to go out there and help this team win,” said Brown. “Whoever it is, we’re just trying to be the best versions of ourselves every day. And we’re not worried about, at the end of a practice, we’re not gonna be like, ‘Oh, he did better than me this day or that.’ It’s how did I perform? What did I get better at today? What was I really working at today to get better? And if I get myself better every day, that’s gonna be a really good few months that I’ve built up.”
McCord is likely the favorite in most college football experts’ eyes, given the fact that he has taken more in-game snaps over the past two seasons. Conversely, Brown has seen action in just one game; last year’s 77-21 victory over Toledo. We don’t know whether or not Brown will be the starter come week one, but what we do know is he is focused on being the best version of himself and giving it all he can to the Buckeyes program.

McCord also gave a few words on his mindset on the Buckeyes quarterback competition happening during training camp. And he and Brown appear to be on the same page when it comes to overall expectations.
“I think, not even you know, focusing on the competition, I feel the best I have felt going into a camp before,” said McCord. “Obviously, I’ve had the most experience I’ve had going into a camp. And now, more so than ever, I’m just focusing on myself. I know I’ll be in a good position if you know I put the best version of myself out there.
