Former Iowa State wrestler Cody Chittum committed to Ohio State out of the NCAA transfer portal, per Justin Basch. He’ll have two years of eligibility left.

Chittum went 35-15 in two seasons with the Cyclones, qualifying for NCAAs both years. He finished in the Round of 16 in 2025, two wins shy of All-American status.

Having wrestled at 157 pounds his whole career, he is projected at the same weight next season, per WrestleStat. Currently, Ohio State has Brandon Cannon at 157 and e’Than Birden at 165.

Cannon broke out this year with a 24-5 record as a redshirt freshman, in place of two-time NCAA finalist Sammy Sasso. Sasso wrestled at 165 and then 157 this year during his comeback following a gunshot wound in 2023. He has since retired from the sport.

Chittum likely has to compete for one of those two spots (157 or 165). Cannon finished in the Blood Round in 2025 while Birden went 9-6 in redshirt and will be a redshirt freshman next season.

After graduating high school early, Chittum took a “greyshirt” year, which essentially meant he deferred his college eligibility for a year. He spent the 2022-23 campaign training with the Hawkeye Wrestling Club.

Chittum was originally part of the Class of 2023 and was the No. 1 overall prospect, according to MatScouts, but reclassified and graduated early. After committing to Minnesota earlier in his high school career, he flipped to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

But then, Chittum flipped to Iowa State after an initial commitment from Anthony Ferrari, the middle of the Ferrari brothers. Oldest AJ is a 2021 NCAA champion at 197, at Oklahoma State, wrestled this past season at Cal State Bakersfield and is now at North Carolina for his final two seasons. Youngest brother Angelo is set to be a redshirt freshman next season at Iowa following a successful first year on campus.

Anthony never enrolled at Iowa and ended up at Long Island University this past season. He entered the portal and ended up at Morgan State this month.

Chittum won Who’s Number One, Super 32, a junior freestyle Fargo title, and competed on the senior level this year winning medals in three different events – Bill Farrell (silver), Henri Deglane (bronze), Egypt Ranking Series (bronze).
