Report: Former Ohio State star Dwayne Haskins had .24 BAC at time of death
The tragic death of former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Dwayne Haskins struck the football world, and now more details have surfaced on the day of the accident. According to Andy Slater, Haskins had been drinking before being struck by the vehicle.
Haskins reportedly had an elevated blood-alcohol level at the time of his death, but the death still appears to be an accident.
“NEW: Dwayne Haskins had a blood-alcohol level of .24 when he was killed,” Slater tweeted. “Haskins had been out drinking at a Miami nightclub, got into a fight, and left, investigators say. He was in the car with a woman and they ran out of gas. Cops say the tragedy appears to be an accident.”
Slater also reported that when Haskins’ vehicle ran out of gas, he spent nearly 20 minutes on the search for gas.
“Haskins was walking around for about 20 minutes looking for gas, according to investigators,” said Slater.
Haskins made a name for himself in 2018, which was Ryan Day’s second season as the Buckeyes offensive coordinator. That year, Haskins completed 70% of his passes for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns, finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting. Ohio State went 13-1 overall and 8-1 against Big Ten opponents in 2018, winning the conference title. He went on to become a first round NFL Draft pick.

Ryan Day spoke at a vigil after the death of Haskins
Following the death of Haskins, many of his former coaches and teammates have spoken out on how big of an impact he had on everyone around him. Ryan Day, who is now Ohio State’s head coach, saw Haskins’ impact on Ohio State firsthand.
Day spoke at a vigil after Haskins’ death, and he had a heartfelt message on the legacy that the former Buckeyes star leaves behind.
“But the thing to me that was most amazing about that year was the legacy he left behind,” Day said. “It’s been said before that some men don’t fear death, they fear being irrelevant or being insignificant. I can tell you something right now, Dwayne Haskins left a legacy behind. He was relevant, he was significant, he had an impact on so many people at Ohio State and I know so many in your life.
“But in such a short time, the impact he made on this earth – I just wish I had more time with him, and I know we all do here. I just want to let you know that Ohio State and our program is forever in debt to Dwayne Haskins and the Haskins family. God bless.”
