Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson broke down the Buckeye quarterbacks on Wednesday during an interview with the Big Ten Network.

“I’ll say with C.J., he really drops the ball in there,” Wilson said. “The best way to put it, it’s like Russell Wilson, it falls on you, so it makes it really easy to catch the deep ball.”

While Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has yet to name a starting quarterback, he called a Saturday morning press conference where it is expected he will name his starter. Stroud is the likely QB1, and Day recently explained to the Big Ten Network what made the redshirt freshman stand out.

“Yeah, I think it’s a body of work over 27 practices when you count the spring,” Day said. “We try to just take it one day at a time and look at the body of work. It’s not one thing, but day in, day out, [he’s] making really good decisions, leadership. Obviously taking care of the football and the ability to win in the red zone and win on third down are critical. At the end of the day, we’re gonna have one person playing quarterback against Minnesota on September 2nd and then it’s a long year from there.”

The other Buckeye quarterbacks in the mix

Next in line are quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Jack Miller.

“Kyle, he’s the hardest-working quarterback I’ve met, so from the day he walked in he’s had a huge impact on getting us all out to the field, getting us to go throw, and that’s something that can’t be understated because, I mean, Kyle’s my dude. I love him,” Wilson said.

Philadelphia-native McCord recently had his black stripe removed from his helmet, a right of passage for Buckeye freshmen. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback enrolled early to compete for the starting job.

“Then Jack, he’s the dude that’s always out there keeping the energy high, always keeps you laughing, throwing dots and stuff,” Wilson said. “So, we love all three of the quarterbacks.”

Like Stroud, Miller is a redshirt freshman. He ran the ball twice for 23 yards and a touchdown last season.

Wilson also commented on freshman Quinn Ewers, who arrived on campus last week after forgoing his senior season of high school football.

“Then Quinn just got here,” Wilson said. “I think two days ago we saw him for the first time. He’s still trying to figure things out. He’s a little more quiet on the sidelines, but in the locker room he’s a real cool dude. We’re all getting to know him, so he’s going to be great.”

Ewers is from outside of Dallas, and his first NIL deal is a partnership with Holy Beverages and Hope Squad, a Texas kombucha company.
