Ryan Day reveals Ohio State's redshirt plans
The fifth game of the season is crucial for every team in the country but not because of the results. Players who have played in all four previous matchups will have decisions coming their way. Per NCAA rules, anybody who exceeds four games cannot redshirt. Coaches like Ohio State’s Ryan Day must make critical but careful choices on who enters the game.
Day was asked what the program’s plans for redshirts were for the 2022 season, with the head coach saying there is nothing new on their end. Freshmen who have played early in the year will continue to play and “that was the expectation going into the season.” However, Day said things could change down the road “if appropriate.”

“Not really,” Day said. “Most of those guys who are going to go play in this game, we’ve talked about. They’re going to play. Couple guys, we had to have conversations with. At this point, the guys who are going to be playing in this game are going to be playing for the year.
“That was the expectation going into the season. There might be another conversation in another couple of weeks if appropriate for maybe a couple other players but right now, we’re in good shape. The guys who are playing are going to play all year.”
Ohio State signed the fourth highest rated recruiting class during the 2022 class, bringing in great talent — especially on the defensive side. Players such as Sonny Styles and CJ Hicks have made contributions early in the season.

According to Day, those kinds of players will continue to play in the remaining eight games for the Buckeyes.
Ryan Day provides update on Denzel Burke
Ohio State cornerback Denzel Burke missed the Buckeyes’ last game versus Wisconsin last week, the first he’s missed in his two seasons, but will be back in action for their defense this weekend as they take on Rutgers according to Day.
“It was too close from when it occurred to put him in the game, and now he’s had a good week of practice, so great to see him back,” Day said.
Burke participated in pregame warmups last week with a large, padded club over his right hand, but did not end up suiting up for the Buckeyes. When he’s back in action this week, it will be interesting to see what protective equipment he sports considering the importance of hands at the cornerback position, as coach Day and his staff monitor his status.
