In the final minutes of Friday’s Cotton Bowl against Texas, Ohio State needed a big play from its defense. The Longhorns had 4th-and-Goal, trailing by a touchdown with 2:24 remaining, and Jack Sawyer rose to the occasion.

Sawyer sacked Quinn Ewers and forced a fumble. He then took the ball back 83 yards for a touchdown to put Ohio State ahead 28-14, which held as the final score. It was virtually a game-sealing play to send the Buckeyes to the national championship – and Sawyer dropped new NIL apparel to celebrate it.

The NIL Store launchedScoop ‘N Score” merchandise to commemorate Sawyer’s moment through his NIL deal with the company. T-shirts, crew neck sweatshirts and hoodies were part of the drop, and fans can get 20% off through the weekend.

Sawyer made his presence known throughout the Cotton Bowl. He had three tackles and two pass break-ups, as well. But the strip-sack of Ewers – his former roommate – is the play Ohio State fans will remember for a long time.

Speaking with ESPN’s Laura Rutledge after the game, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said he had a message for his team before the College Football Playoff semifinal. With his effort on that strip-sack, Sawyer lived it out.

“To make a play like that in that moment – and we talked about it before the game, do you want to leave a legacy behind and become a legend?” Day said. “He just became a legend at Ohio State.”

Jack Sawyer: ‘I kind of blacked out’ on game-sealing play

Jack Sawyer is just one of the big names on Ohio State’s roster as the Buckeyes get ready to take on Notre Dame in the national championship. His On3 NIL Valuation ranks seventh on the team and No. 64 in the college football NIL rankings. That figure also ranks No. 99 in the On3 NIL 100, the first of its kind and defacto NIL ranking of the top 100 high school and college athletes ranked by their On3 NIL Valuation.

Sawyer was part of Day’s first recruiting class at Ohio State. He’s a captain on this year’s team, wearing his Buckeye pride on his sleeve. Friday night, he rose to the occasion and is now part of program lore. However, when recalling the sequence, Sawyer said it was a blur.

“This means everything to me,” Sawyer told Holly Rowe. “God’s blessed this team with so much talent. I kind of blacked out when I ran over. And I picked it up. Coach put us in a great position. I was just put in a good position by the coaches and I saw the ball pop right to me after I tackled him. I was just thinking I gotta keep staying on my feet because like I said I almost blacked out when I saw nothing but green grass ahead of me.”
