Jack Sawyer shares what he said to Quinn Ewers after game
In Ohio State‘s 28-14 win over Texas on Friday, Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer reunited with an old friend. With just over two minutes left in the game, Texas was fourth-and-goal on OSU’s 8-yard line.
On the play, Sawyer’s former roommate and Texas quarterback, Quinn Ewers, rolled out to his left. However, Sawyer was familiar with Ewers’ moves, tracking the QB from behind and swiping the ball out of his hands before he could throw it.
Sawyer didn’t stop there, returning the fumble 83 yards for a touchdown — the longest scoop-and-score in College Football Playoff history. When the clock hit zero, Sawyer and Ewers could be seen chatting in the sea of players. After the game, Sawyer pulled back the curtain on his conversation with his former roommate.
“I just said ‘Great season,'” Sawyer said. “He’s a good guy. He’s a great dude. He’s had a lot of success, and he’s a great person. I just told him, ‘Keep your head up. You played a great game, and you have a great future ahead of you. Stay in touch with me soon.’
“Shoutout to Texas. They’re a great team, a great group of coaches on that staff. They punched us hard a few times, and it was a battle all the way to the fourth quarter the way we knew it would be.”

Sawyer’s scoop-and-score wasn’t his only standout play of the game. The star senior finished the win with three tackles and a pass deflection as well.
Sawyer boasts career-highs of 56 tackles, nine sacks, three forced fumbles and six pass breakups this season. While he could’ve moved on to the NFL this past offseason, he opted to return to Ohio State for the 2024 campaign and attempt to bring home a national title.
Now, Jack Sawyer is only one win away from achieving his goal. On Jan. 20, the Buckeyes will square off against Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. ET. Sawyer is excited to take the field one more time with his team.
“I love Columbus, I love the state of Ohio, and I love Ohio State football,” Sawyer said. “Like I’ve said a million times after the game, God is great and he’s put this team in such a great spot and I’m just so fortunate to be playing in a national championship in my last year here.”
