Ohio State sensation Jeremiah Smith has set the program’s freshman record for most receiving yards in a game, doing so in a Rose Bowl romp over top-seeded Oregon.

Smith had a monster first half, setting him up just short of Cris Carter‘s old record of 172 yards in a game.

In the second half, Jeremiah Smith broke Carter’s long-standing record by hauling in two more passes, taking his game total to seven catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

It’s just the latest record for the freshman phenom, who has taken the nation by storm.

In early November, Smith took down another of Carter’s records when he recorded his ninth touchdown catch of the season. That was the most by a freshman in the program’s history.

The record was previously held by Carter, who had eight touchdown receptions in 1984. Jeremiah Smith broke the record with a 17-yard touchdown reception in a game against Purdue.

Smith has since extended that record to 14 touchdown receptions.

Cris Carter went on to have a Hall of Fame career after starring at Ohio State. While it’s early, Smith could be heading down a similar path. He’s drawing some wildly favorable comparisons.

Early on, it was apparent Jeremiah Smith had the traits to make an immediate impact. Tim Tebow saw practice before the season got started and saw something similar to a receiver he played against in 2008 and 2009: Julio Jones.

Tebow pointed out the similarities between Smith and Jones during a Heisman Trophy Preview Show on ESPN. His frame and big-play ability stand out, and it’s why the former Florida star argued Smith is a scary matchup for opposing defenses.

“We need to give a lot of love to Jeremiah Smith at Ohio State,” Tebow said. “When I went to practice at the beginning of the season, I looked at him and I couldn’t help but think, ‘Oh my goodness. It’s the next Julio Jones.’ And I know that is a big comparison, but he looks just like him. He’s a big-bodied receiver that goes up, physically, and catches the football.

“He’s able to big-body DBs, he’s able to make one-handed catches just like that. This is a kid that makes DBs look little and they are afraid. They do not want to face him.”

One year in, that much is clear.
