Patrick Mahomes reacts to CJ Stroud's historic performance
CJ Stroud and the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes entered Saturday’s home contest with the No. 7 Michigan State Spartans in need of a win.
Both programs entered the matchup with hopes of controlling their own fate and punching a ticket to the Big Ten Championship game, and while Ohio State was heavily favored, Mel Tucker’s Spartans were not to be taken lightly.
What resulted, however, was a beatdown the likes of which Ohio State has only matched in a 59-7 win over Akron in Week 4. Thanks to an incredible performance from Stroud, the Buckeyes emerged victorious in emphatic fashion.
Stroud’s incredible day caught the eyes of media and fans across the nation. And evidently, it caught the eye of a quarterback who knows a thing or two about historic performances in former NFL MVP and Super Bowl Champion Patrick Mahomes.
“6TDs 400yds 2 incompletions in the first half,” Mahomes said on Twitter. “Lolol”
Mahomes was amused by Stroud’s first-half performance, and for good reason. Stroud finished with 29 completions in 31 attempts, along with 393 passing yards and a school record-tying six touchdowns. As Ohio State entered halftime with a 49-0 lead, Stroud had already completed a 23-yard touchdown pass, a 43-yard touchdown pass and a 77-yard touchdown pass, to name a few.
In the end, Stroud finished the 56-7 blowout with 32 completions in 35 passing attempts, along with 432 passing yards and six touchdowns. He was replaced by freshman Kyle McCord late in the game, as the Buckeyes had already pulled away with the blowout.

Stroud connects with Chris Olave for Ohio State record
In truth, Stroud wasn’t the only Ohio State Buckeye breaking records on Saturday. With Stroud’s help, star wide receiver Chris Olave was able to break a record of his own.
By catching his second touchdown of the day against Michigan State on Saturday, Olave became Ohio State’s all-time leader in career touchdown receptions with 35 to pass David Boston for the record. Olave’s first touchdown, tying the record, was a 23-yard strike in the first quarter. The second score for Olave was a deep 43-yard touchdown pass from Stroud.
Olave’s speed was on display, as he easily beat the Michigan State defenders down the field for the score. Ohio State went up 21-0 on Olave’s record-setting play. Shortly after, Michigan State fumbled, giving the Buckeyes the ball again. Ohio State quickly took a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter and by then, the game’s final result — a 56-7 score — had already been written.
Olave finished the day with a fantastic stat line, as Stroud frequently found him well past Michigan State’s struggling secondary. Olave had seven receptions for 140 receiving yards and two touchdowns, averaging a whopping 20 yards per reception.
