Kirk Herbstreit responds after being called out by Will Muschamp
Georgia and Ohio State are prepped to face off against one another in the College Football Playoff, playing in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. Some back and forth has already begun but not between former players. Instead, it’s former Buckeye Kirk Herbstreit and former Bulldog defensive back, Will Muschamp.
Muschamp reflected on the 1993 Citrus Bowl win over Ohio State, where Herbstreit was the opposing quarterback. The now-Georgia co-defensive coordinator said he knew they would win once he saw Herbstreit throw a pass during a pre-game luncheon.
Herbstreit had the opportunity to explain himself, saying he was not throwing a normal football into the crowd. Due to the size and unfamiliarity, Herbstreit had to use a different form and look awkward to a certain degree.
“I do remember it was one of the autographed balls, those white panel balls, and I remember throwing it and not being real happy with how far I had to throw it because I couldn’t grip the ball,” Herbstreit said. “So, I shot putted the ball. That’s about all I remember. But no, I don’t have any comments or reaction at all to what Will said.”
Herbstreit did not have a good day against Georgia in the Citrus Bowl dating back to 1993, completing just eight of his 24 passing attempts. Going for just 110 yards, 45 of those came on one play. No touchdowns and an interception saw Ohio State lose 21-14.
So no, there are not too many fond memories from Herbstreit regarding facing Georgia. Both before the game at a luncheon and during the game, even if he does not remember too much about Muschamp.
“I don’t even remember, man,” Herbstreit said. “Was that 100 years ago? I remember when I played in the early ’90s, and I would think back to my dad played, he was a captain in 1960, when I was that age, my dad would talk about playing.
“I felt like he was talking about 1860, and now I’m that guy. I’m that guy. So, I just remember Georgia being really good and very athletic, and I don’t remember much about Will at all.”

Will Muschamp takes hilarious shot at Kirk Herbstreit
Georgia and Ohio State have only ever played once before, in the 1993 Citrus Bowl. Oddly enough, co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp played in that game for the Bulldogs.
Will Muschamp was asked about that game and used that as an opportunity to take a shot at current ESPN analyst and former Buckeye, Kirk Herbstreit.
“It was a good win for the Dawgs,” Will Muschamp said.
“We had a pre-not game, but I guess a luncheon, and Herbstreit got up and threw a pass across the room, I knew we had a shot to win,” Will Muschamp laughed. “Make sure he knows I said that.”
Interestingly enough, that Citrus Bowl was largely dominated by the running game, so Herbstreit’s throwing ability wasn’t a huge factor in the game. A tie game going into the fourth, only Georgia found the endzone in the final quarter, giving the Dawgs a 21-14 win.
Will Muschamp played defensive back for Georgia between 1991 and 1994. During his senior season, he was even named team captain.
