The Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback competition continues as the team is in the midst of their 2023 fall camp. Currently, the two favorites to secure the starting nod for the 2023 season are junior Kyle McCord and sophomore Devin Brown.
Recently, McCord, the veteran of the two, shared his mindset about the ongoing quarterback battle. While some may focus on beating out their competition to earn the starting spot, the junior quarterback is more fixated on being the best version of himself.
“I think, not even you know, focusing on the competition, I feel the best I have felt going into a camp before,” said McCord. “Obviously, I’ve had the most experience I’ve had going into a camp. And now, more so than ever, I’m just focusing on myself. I know I’ll be in a good position if you know I put the best version of myself out there.
In his first two seasons at Ohio State, McCord has not seen much of the field. His time with the Buckeyes has been spent primarily as the backup for the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, CJ Stroud. But with Stroud now in the NFL and poised to be the franchise quarterback of the Houston Texans, Ohio State is looking to either McCord or Brown to fill the former Heisman-trophy candidate’s shoes.

McCord’s first two years at Ohio State
When given the opportunity in game action over the past two seasons, McCord has shown flashes of what made him a five-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class. During his college career, he has played in a total of 12 games, completing 41 of his 58 pass attempts for a completion percentage just north of 70 present. McCoy has thrown for 606 yards, averaging 10.4 yards for a pass with three passing touchdowns. However, he does have two interceptions to his name. But both of those came during his freshman campaign in 2021.
Time is quickly approaching for Ohio State to make a decision on what they would do at quarterback this season. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to many, but the Buckeyes have aspirations of competing for and winning both the Big Ten and the College Football Playoff this season. Ohio State has two quality choices in Brown and McCord. And as it stands right now, McCord is showing he has the skills and the mindset to lead the Buckeyes to a possible national championship this season.
