Marvin Harrison Jr. on Maserati Marv nickname from Gus Johnson: 'It was great'
Gus Johnson is one of the icons of broadcasting in college football, known for his energetic calls. In recent seasons, that’s included referring to Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. as “Maserati Marv.”
It’s a nickname that caught some steam and popularity among college football fans. It’s also a nickname that Harrison himself heard about and thought was great.
“It was great. It was great,” Harrison said. “After the game, like the phone was kind of blowing up with the nickname. I got to speak to Gus afterwards and I told him I don’t mind it, so keep rolling.”
Marvin Harrison Jr. more than earned his nickname from Gus Johnson. He was an electric player at the college level, with 155 receptions for 2,613 yards and 31 touchdowns. During that time, he won the Biletnikoff Award and was a two-time unanimous All-American.
Between an incredible college career and being the son of NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Marvin Harrison, Maserati Marv was an elite wide receiver prospect going into the 2024 NFL Draft and he was selected fourth overall by the Arizona Cardinals. He was the first non-quarterback taken off the board.
Despite that, Harrison did admit that it was difficult to leave Ohio State when he did.
“You know, I think, a lot of things,” Harrison said. “I left unfinished and unsatisfied in college. Just for what was best for me at that moment was to move on with my career.”
