Maurice Clarett changes tune on firing Ryan Day
One of the Ohio State greats has chimed in with his opinion on Ryan Day, and he’s done a 180 in the wake of this season and Saturday’s result against Michigan.
Former running back Maurice Clarett weighed in with a lengthy post on Twitter, explaining why he is no longer in favor of canning the coach.
“I’m NOT on the fire Ryan Day train,” Clarett wrote. “I used to troll because it was the popular thing to say last year but after spending time around the kids and the staff I strongly disagree.
“The man whooped 2 Top 5 teams in the past 30 days and I didn’t hear a soul say anything.”
Clarett has been vocal about wanting Ohio State to part ways with Ryan Day in the past. After last year’s game against Michigan, he came out on Twitter and voiced his displeasure.
“Ryan Day… Love you bro but gotta go,” Clarett wrote. “This is why you’re paid millions. Cant get paid 9’ms and lose 3 straight.”
Of course, Saturday’s result was a 13-10 loss to Michigan, the program’s fourth consecutive defeat at the hands of the Wolverines. So you might expect Clarett to continue banging the ‘Fire Ryan Day’ drum.
Not so.
If anything, he’s seeing some imbalance in how Day is covered and talked about in the media and the public. He referenced the two wins over Penn State and Indiana as proof.

“There wasn’t Much credit given in proportion to what criticism is given to him/them when they lose,” Clarett wrote.
As far as Saturday’s game, which was a frustrating one for many Ohio State fans, Clarett pointed to mistakes outside of Ryan Day. And after getting a closer look at the program under Day, he’s throwing his support behind the head coach.
“We had 2 interceptions inside the 10…” Clarett wrote. “Once going in for a score and one where we put them in scoring position, 2 missed field goals, missed tackle on a 3rd down that extended their drive…..
“Lots to point to but it sure wasn’t RD fault. That’s been the default answer that I helped to contribute to last year but I’m admitting that it was wrong.”
Ryan Day is 66-10 as Ohio State’s head coach, now in his sixth season.
