Until Monday night, there may have not been a more criticized person in college football than Ryan Day. Four consecutive losses to Michigan weighed on him and the program, especially this past season’s result. But to Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork, all of it should now be washed away.

Bjork called out the criticism Day has faced following Ohio State’s national championship win against Notre Dame. He can deal with some of the on-field discussion but Bjork mentioned some of the personal shots taken at Day.

Now, Bjork wants people to praise Day as the best head coach this sport has to offer.

“There’s no way he should go [through] the stuff, especially his family,” Bjork said via Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. “It’s one thing to criticize play calling, but the personal stuff is uncalled for. And what I hope that people really take away from this is we have the best coach in the country.”

In the closing moments of the game, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit had similar comments. Not many are closer to Ohio State than Herbstreit due to his past and his son being on the team. He understands what Day has been going through and said as such on the broadcast.

“I’m a friend of his,” Herbstreit said. “Very objective and try to be as fair as I can be. I hear the stories behind the curtain. I know what he and his wife and his family go through.

“It’s tough. It’s tough to be a coach at a premium school where you’re expected to win every game. He handled it with such class. He gets on top of the mountain.”

Moving back to Bjork’s comments, Day certainly has a case for now being college football’s top coach. His winning percentage is nearly 90% but the issue was Ohio State could not break through in the postseason. Even when the Buckeyes were taking down their arch-rivals, national championship success was nowhere to be found.

There are not too many more questions for Day to answer, though. Demons were excorsized in Atlanta and Day has a national championship nobody can ever take away from him. Bjork has the utmost confidence in his head coach and hopes people on the outside begin to feel the same way moving forward.
