Former Ohio State Buckeyes star quarterback Dwayne Haskins tragically passed away on Saturday morning after he was struck by a car in south Florida. The news is heartbreaking for the Ohio State and NFL communities. Following the tragic news, Ohio State athletics released a statement on the death of Haskins.

“The Ohio State Department of Athletics is terribly saddened to learn of the death of Dwayne Haskins Saturday morning,” the statement said. “We are thinking of the entire Haskins family during this most difficult time. Our prayers are with the family, and with his current and former teammates, coaches, friends and relatives.”

Multiple Ohio State coaches and teammates took to Twitter with some emotional reactions to the news of Haskins passing away.

In two years at Ohio State, Haskins threw for 5,396 yards with 54 touchdowns and eight interceptions, also adding four rushing touchdowns. He was the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2018 after throwing for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns.

Haskins left lasting impressions at Ohio State, in NFL

In reading the reactions to the death of Haskins by his former coaches and teammates, it is clear that he was widely respected among his peers. Everywhere he went, he left an impression, and that started at Ohio State.

Haskins was the 15th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, beginning his NFL career in Washington. Most recently, Haskins has spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin released an emotional statement following the death of Haskins, as did the Washington Commanders. Haskins was down in Florida to work out and bond with some of his Steelers teammates. Additional reports have emerged on Haskins’ death, saying that he stepped out of his car after pulling over on the highway, and he was then struck by another vehicle.

“My understanding is he pulled alongside the highway for some reason, got out of his car and at that point in time, he got hit by another car,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said. “So this is a tragic situation here that’s unfolding.”
