With the Ohio State opener against Indiana less than two weeks away, head coach Ryan Day is still not ready to name a starting quarterback.

It’s no surprise that an update on the quarterback battle was the first topic Day was asked about during his press conference Monday morning. Day provided a lengthy update but shared that he still hasn’t decided on his guy.

“So both graded out champions in the last scrimmage. Both have gotten better. But to this point right now, I mean, as honestly as I can say it, there’s not one that won the job. There’s not one that’s lost the job,” Day said. “There’s been times over this camp where I’ve felt like one was going to take over and the other one came back. It was like a horse race and they just kept pulling away and then the other one would catch up.”

Sophomores Kyle McCord and Devin Brown are battling for the Ohio State starting quarterback job. Both prospects were five-star recruits, with McCord in the class of 2021 and Brown in the class of 2022.

Day recently asked the Ohio State staff for their opinions. He shared that the group was split.

“I think first off that our staff feels confident with both of them, which is exciting. I think this is two good players getting after it. I think they’re making each other better. We’ve gotten them more reps than I think we have anybody else in any of the camps that I’ve been here. The two fields help us. Having 120 guys able to practice was big,” Day said.

“I asked the staff this weekend after the scrimmage. I just took a straw poll and it was almost split right down the middle. So what does that mean? Well, I think that it’s going to continue to go on this week and go from there. Is there a chance that both of them could play in the first game? I think the answer is yes, that’s a chance. But we’re going to keep working. We don’t have to make that decision right now.”

While the decision doesn’t have to come right now, it does need to come fairly soon. The Buckeyes’ season opener is only 12 days away.

These next few practices will be key in determining who starts against the Hoosiers.

“I can tell you that I am pleased with their progress, and our staff feels strong with both of them playing,” Day said. “Where it goes, we’ll keep putting one foot in front of the other.”
