WATCH: Ohio State drops hype video ahead of Notre Dame matchup in Week 1
The second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes enter the 2022 season much like they do every year, with sky high expectations on their shoulders. The Buckeyes have one of the best programs in all of college football and the spotlight will once again be on Columbus, Ohio on Saturday night, when they face the No. 5 ranked team in America, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Ohio State dropped an epic hype video on Thursday night to gear everyone up for their highly anticipated matchup.
Check it out.
Ohio State returns the nation’s leading Heisman Trophy candidate in signal-caller C.J. Stroud. The Fighting Irish have historically struggled against Top 5 opponents, and they currently have a record of 3-21 overall against teams in the AP Top 5. They’ll have the tall task of trying to contain the nation’s most explosive offensive attack, with weapons all over the place like Stroud, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, TreVeyon Henderson, and Marvin Harrison, Jr.
How will Ohio State defend tight end Michael Mayer?
What to do with Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer is one of the biggest challenges that Jim Knowles and Ohio State’s defense are staring down ahead of their primetime Week 1 matchup. The junior is one of the Irish’s top offensive weapons and Knowles is not underestimating his talent.
Mayer got strong reviews from Knowles, who thinks the gifted tight end will be playing on Sundays. That said, Knowles has a plan to try and neutralize the Fighting Irish’s talented pass catcher.

“You have to mix it up. You have to blend in different coverages and people who are on him, coming from different directions,” Knowles said. “He’s an excellent player. He’s an NFL player. He has that ability to lean into the coverage, find the open spot — so it is about knowing where he is at all times. And making sure that we’re changing it up enough with him to keep him off balance.”
Mayer caught 71 passes for 840 yards and seven touchdowns in 2021 and should be the top target in Notre Dame’s passing attack, unless Knowles and his defense can figure mix it up and slow him down.
