Ohio State defeated Notre Dame 34-23 on Monday night to win the ninth national championship in its program’s storied history.

Before riding off into the sunset, the Buckeyes poked fun at the Irish in the moments after the game went final. Trolling Notre Dame’s longtime ‘Play Like a Champion Today’ motto, Brutus Buckeye adjusted it to make it more fitting for Ohio State’s current status.

“Gold trophies not helmets,” the tweet read.

Notre Dame took an early advantage to begin the game, taking nearly 10 minutes off the clock during the opening quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Ohio State went on to score three touchdowns on three drives during the first half, scoring the game’s next 21 points and taking a 14-point lead into the break.

Despite the Buckeyes extending their lead early in the second half, Notre Dame would rally back. Cutting the lead to eight points in the fourth quarter, Ohio State stood strong and after a late fourth-quarter field goal and put the game out of reach for the Fighting Irish.

Ohio State quarterback Will Howard finished the game having completed 17 of 21 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns. He completed his first 12 passes of the game — a national championship game record for a quarterback. Howard also added 16 carries for 57 yards during the contest.

Howard was second on the team in rushing, only behind running back Quinshon Judkins, who transferred into the program from Ole Miss last offseason. Judkins scored three touchdowns during the championship game, including two on the ground and another from Howard through the air. He finished the game with 121 total yards of offense.

However, it was a 56-yard reception from true freshman Howard to Jeremiah Smith down the sideline with less than two minutes left in the game. The gutsy play call would set up Ohio State with the go-ahead field goal to push the lead to 11 points.

The Buckeyes have now won the very first CFP in 2014, as well as having won the first-ever 12-team playoff. After beating Notre Dame on Monday night, Ohio State can once again claim the title of national champion.
