Ohio State head coach Ryan Day joined Letterman Row’s Austin Ward to discuss the upcoming season and provide an update on his music playlist. The third-year head coach enters the season with the No. 4 team in the country and chance to make it back to the College Football Playoffs.

Throughout the grueling summer schedule of a college football coach, there are few opportunities to relax. That leads Day to a familiar era of music over and over.

“I guess I’ve been listening to a little bit more 70’s and 80’s,” said Day. “This summer I listened to some different stuff from back there, kind of some easy listening stuff. I’m not going to give you the one, you’d probably make fun of me if your heard what they were, but just easier listening stuff as we relax in the summer. That’s part of it too, there’s just so much going on, sometimes music allows you to calm down a little bit as a coach.

Despite the possible embarrassment of his playlist, it seems to be a favorite of Day. While he is unlikely to get it on the speakers during practice or in the stadium on gameday, it provides him with a reprieve from the stress of the job.

Out of touch with new music

The music he does hear on gamedays is completely foreign, Ryan Day has not kept up with the times in recent years and is unfamiliar with most of the music he comes across.

“I can’t say I’m up with the new songs and the new bands right now,” said Day. “The guys on the team have been listening to some stuff, I don’t even know what it is. They were singing some song the other day, I didn’t know what it was, I kind of liked it. I’ve kind of lost touch I feel like with some of the current music.”

One of the contributing factors to Day’s lack of music current music knowledge is the COVID-19 pandemic. He has not been able to go to a concert in two years and is in the car with his kids less often.
